Overview

People often form goals by repeating the same action within a given context. It is the frequency of this action that people perceive their goals as being met. By completing the same course of actions over again, people feel a sense of relief as they have finished their said habits and goals.

Analog and digital calendars are popular tools to help people plan and keep goals. There are many existing applications on the market and we wanted to develop an intuitive and simple habit-building tool to help overcome the shortcomings of a digital calendar and habit tracking system.

Secondary Research

We did market research on the existing calendar and habit building products. We wanted to see how we would be able to build off of these ideas and differentiate ourselves.

We found a popular South Korean application called, "Challengers" that was focused on habit building. Their biggest advantage is that they provide rewards for their users and also shows other people's progress, which can be motivational. Their biggest disadvantage is that they have way too many functions, which makes their application complicated.

After research, we found that productivity-oriented products were already successful in the market. So, we shifted our focus towards a more customizable and aesthetic calendar.

Primary Research
Findings
  1.  Most participants enjoyed to plan their schedules from the comfort of their own homes,   specifically from their desks.

  2.  Users seemed to follow a weekly basis schedule.

  3.  Analog users enjoyed using their physical calendars because they liked the aesthetic aspect.   They enjoyed the personalization touch of being able to decorate it how they like.

Advantages:

👍  Good and intuitive.

👍  The IOT (mobile application) part is good. They like seeing their overall progress.

Disadvantages

👎  It looks like a Chinese toilet. They want it to be thin, modern, and clean.

👎  Not satisfied with initial falling concept, want to be rewarded for completing their goals.

👎  Too bulky for a desk decoration. Wished that it was smaller.

🎨  Design -> modified to a cleaner and more modern design so that is more suitable as an interior design piece.

👊  Function -> we increased it so that users would have three habits to build. This will increase the amount of interactions done per day.

💡 User experience -> erased the negative image of a collapsing tower so we replaced the concept with having lit up stones that get brighter as the stack gets taller.

Results and Takeaways

We were told to design an Internet of Things (IOT) product that did not need a screen. Screens could be a secondary add on to our product, but it cannot be the main system. This was a new concept to me because I was very used to designing for the web. I had to learn to use prototyping tools like isopink, and I had so much fun using new tools. This broadened my scope and skills as a designer and I am extremely glad that this project pushed me out of my comfort zone!

This project was personally a challenge for me. We were given a lot of creative freedom and while this is a good thing, it was hard for me to design a product with no specific goal. Nonetheless, it was fun to brainstorm with my groupmates and learn about the different products that we use in our own countries. Because this was a challenging project for me, it made the final product much more rewarding. It was very satisfying to see all our hard work pay off.
